Dance of the Shadows

Dance of the Shadows

Get ready for an exciting nature adventure for little explorers! Our "Dance of the Shadows" activity takes preschool and elementary school children aged 3–10 into the magical world of the sun. On a sunny day, by observing and tracing the shadows of trees, flowers, stones, and other objects around us, children begin to understand the dynamic structure of nature. Throughout the day, as they follow the changing shapes and directions of shadows, they will discover in a fun way how the sun’s movement affects nature. This activity is not just a fun game; it also offers an educational experience that fosters a love of nature, develops observation skills and scientific thinking, and raises environmental awareness in children.

Activity Objectives:

leaf To grasp the daily movement of the sun by observing and trying to understand its motion.

leaf To understand how shadows are formed by observing how the shapes and sizes of different objects’ shadows change.

leaf To develop observation skills through drawing and to learn to notice details in nature.

leaf To increase environmental awareness by recognizing different objects found in nature.

leaf To comprehend the importance of sunlight and its role in nature.

leaf To enhance creative thinking and problem-solving skills, and to learn to think from different perspectives.

First the Story

Ruka had fallen asleep under the afternoon sun. When she woke up, her shadow was gone! With curious eyes, she looked around. Just then, Tako came over to her.

What happened, Ruka? What are you looking at?

Tako! Just a moment ago, my shadow was right above my head, but now it’s gone! Where did it go?

Really? Look, my shadow is still here! But just a moment ago, it was longer.

Wow! So shadows move too! How does that happen?

Because the sun moves, our shadows change too. When the sun’s position changes, the shadow also shifts, and it gets longer or shorter.

That’s so interesting! Can we study this more closely? Maybe we can draw how our shadows move!

Great idea! How about some shadow hunting? We can watch and draw how the shadows change throughout the day.

Yes! Let’s call our activity “Dance of the Shadows”!

Perfect name! Let’s get started then!

Activity

Let’s all start the “Dance of the Shadows” activity together! First, we need to choose a sunny day. We need a sunny garden, park, or an open area. Let’s bring along some colored chalks, papers, and pencils. If we can’t find these materials, a small stick to draw on the soil will also work.

Before starting the activity, let’s make sure the sun is not shining directly into our eyes. Don’t forget to wear our sunglasses! Let’s choose objects around us such as trees, flowers, and stones. Carefully draw the shadow of the chosen object on the ground with chalk. Try to reflect the shape and size of the shadow as accurately as possible. Remember, we must protect nature, so be careful while using chalk and avoid harming the plants.

Now let’s look at our watch and record the time of our first drawing. After one hour, draw the shadow of the same object again. Observe how the shape and direction of the shadow change. Carefully examine the changes and note how the shadow gets longer or shorter, and how its direction shifts. We can record these changes by drawing them on paper or taking photos. We can repeat this process for a few hours. In each drawing, compare how much the shadow has changed. For example, compare the afternoon shadow with the morning shadow. This way, we can better understand the movement of the sun and the length of shadows. We are learning while having fun!

At the end of the activity, we will have observed how the movement of the sun affects the shadows. Did we understand how the length and direction of the shadow change? By putting our drawings and photos together, we can create a beautiful “Dance of the Shadows” album. We can share this album with our friends and explain to them the movement of the sun and the formation of shadows. Remember, observing and learning about nature is lots of fun! After the activity is over, don’t forget to collect all the materials we used and throw the trash in the bin. Let’s keep nature clean!

Dance of the Shadows Activity Application

Attention!

The activity should be carried out on a sunny day. To protect children from sunburn, a high SPF sunscreen should be applied and re-applied regularly. The use of hats and sunglasses is also recommended. If necessary, the activity can be moved to a shaded area.

The activity area should be checked in advance, and potential hazards (sharp objects, holes, poisonous plants, etc.) should be removed. Measures should be taken to ensure that children can move safely in the activity area. Children should be reminded not to run or bump into each other.

All drawing materials used should be safe and suitable for children’s health. Non-toxic paints and pencils should be chosen, and children should be warned not to put materials in their mouths. All materials used must be collected and properly disposed of after the activity.

Adult supervision is essential throughout the activity. A sufficient number of adults should be assigned to ensure the safety of each child. Adults should be present to secure the environment and to support the children’s active participation in the activity.

Respect for the natural environment must be maintained. Plants and other natural elements should not be harmed. After completing the drawings, the area should be left clean and all waste should be properly disposed of. Necessary steps should be taken to restore the environment to its original condition after the activity.

If children have a history of allergic reactions, this should be reviewed before the activity, and appropriate precautions should be taken. Necessary medication and first-aid supplies should be kept on hand. Contact information and an emergency plan should be prepared in advance for any urgent situation.
