Math Spiral

Math Spiral

This game combines children's counting, addition/subtraction, and step-counting skills with movement. The game can be replayed with different mathematical operations over time.

Purpose of the Activity

leaf To reinforce counting and step-counting (1–5) skills,

leaf To improve mental calculation speed while practicing addition/subtraction,

leaf To support balance, coordination, and following instructions.

The Game

First, draw a large spiral with chalk on the ground; along the spiral path, create evenly spaced circles and write numbers 1–5 inside each circle (numbers can repeat randomly or in a pattern). The starting point is on the outside, and the finish is at the center of the spiral.

Children line up at the start. Each turn, a child rolls a die or draws a card with numbers 1–5. According to the number, the child jumps forward that many circles along the spiral.

The child reads aloud the number on the circle they land on and adds it to their own score. If desired, scores can be written on a group board. The game ends when the first child reaches the center or when the child with the highest total score at the end wins.

Variations: (1) Subtraction: Each child starts with a “target number” (e.g., 20) and subtracts the landed circle’s number from the target; the first to reach exactly zero wins. (2) Step-back rule: If “1” is rolled/drawn, take one step back; if “5” is rolled/drawn, move two steps forward, or adapt with age-appropriate rules. (3) Pattern recognition: Circle numbers are placed in a sequence, and the child has to identify the pattern.

Rules:

leaf Everyone waits for their turn; movement happens only after the die/card result is announced.

leaf When jumping, try not to step outside the lines; move carefully without falling.

leaf The finish must be reached with an exact step; if overshot, the player waits until the next turn (or follows the teacher’s designated step-back rule).

Attention!

The spiral should be drawn on a non-slippery surface with chalk; the area must be cleared of stones, holes, and wet surfaces. If playing under the sun for a long time, plan for water breaks and shaded resting areas.

Number values should be age-appropriate; for younger children use only addition, while for older groups, variations like subtraction/step-back rules can be included.
