Sky Painters

Sky Painters

The Sky Painters activity is an environmental and nature activity designed for preschool and primary school children (ages 3-10). In this activity, children will observe the sky, use their imagination to transform clouds into various shapes, and then draw these shapes on paper or on the ground. This way, children will both gain knowledge about the sky and weather phenomena, and develop their ability to use their imagination.

Objective of the Activity:

leaf To help children gain knowledge about the sky and weather phenomena.

leaf To help children understand that clouds are made of water.

leaf To develop children’s observation skills and their ability to use imagination.

leaf To encourage children to love and protect nature and the environment more.

leaf To ensure children have fun and learn while spending time outdoors.

leaf To support children in gaining environmental awareness and a love for nature.

First, the Story

One summer day, Tako and Ruka went out to the garden to watch the sky. They were cooling off nicely under the sun while watching the clouds. That’s when Tako came up with a fun idea.

Ruka, have you ever seen shapes in the clouds?

Shapes? What kind of shapes?

I mean, sometimes when I look at the clouds, I see things like a rabbit or a tree. Have you ever seen anything like that?

Hmm, I’ve never looked at them that way. But that’s an interesting idea. Shall we try it?

Great! We can watch the sky and use our imagination. By the way, Ruka, do you know something interesting about clouds?

What could I possibly know, Tako? Tell me.

Clouds are actually water! Yes, you heard me right. They form when water is heated by the sun and evaporates. Incredible, isn’t it?

Really? I’m surprised! Then let’s start finding cloud shapes right away.

Activity

For this activity, all you need is a piece of paper, some colored pencils, and lots of imagination. First, lie down in a safe spot and look up at the sky. Observe the clouds and imagine what you see. Maybe you’ll spot an animal, a house, or even a ship. It all depends on your imagination.

Next, draw what you saw in the clouds on paper or on the ground with chalk. At this stage, you can explain to the children that clouds are actually made of tiny water droplets, and that these droplets form when water evaporates from the sun’s heat and rises. If you like, you can also talk about how this evaporation leads to rain. While making your drawings, you can observe how clouds keep changing shape because wind and weather conditions are always shifting them.

Finally, you can share your drawings with each other and talk about the different shapes you spotted in the clouds. This activity not only draws your attention to the sky and weather events but also encourages you to use your imagination. Remember, connecting with nature and interacting with it helps develop environmental awareness.

Attention!

If children will be lying on the ground to watch the clouds, make sure the surface is safe and clean. Be cautious in open areas where there could be glass shards, stones, or other harmful objects.

Ensure that children are dressed appropriately during the activity. Since they will be exposed to sunlight for a longer period, consider sun-protective clothing or sunscreen.

As activities will usually take place outdoors, make sure children bring necessary items like water and snacks. Also, ensure that they are dressed appropriately for the weather conditions.

Be respectful to the environment. Drawings should be made on surfaces that will not harm the environment. At the end of the activity, explain the importance of keeping the environment clean and help the children collect their trash.
