Ring Toss on Sticks

Ring Toss on Sticks

This game is a fun and active activity that combines children's aiming skills with mathematical operations. Children stay physically active while learning addition, subtraction, and multiplication through play.

Objectives of the Activity

leaf To develop aiming skills and hand-eye coordination,

leaf To reinforce addition, subtraction, and multiplication in an enjoyable way,

leaf To support attention, focus, and following instructions.

Materials

leaf 9 sticks (suitable for placing into the ground),

leaf Thick rope rings (5 pieces),

leaf Cards or a marker to write numbers,

leaf A suitable outdoor area (garden or soil ground).

How to Play

First, 9 sticks are placed upright in the ground. The sticks should be arranged in an orderly and neat way. If desired, one stick can be placed in the center and the others positioned to the right, left, top, and bottom to form a plus (+) shape.

A number is written on each stick. These numbers will be used for addition, subtraction, or multiplication depending on the purpose of the game.

Students are given 5 rope rings made of thick braided rope. From a designated distance, they try to toss these rings onto the sticks.

When a student successfully lands a ring on a stick, they earn the number on that stick. At the end of the round, they perform a mathematical operation using the numbers they hit. For example, they can add the numbers or subtract them from a starting number.

Variations: (1) Addition: All hit numbers are added together. (2) Subtraction: The student starts from a given number (e.g., 20) and subtracts the numbers they hit. (3) Multiplication: The hit numbers are multiplied to find the result.

Ring Toss Game

Rules

leaf Everyone waits for their turn, and throws are made from the designated distance.

leaf Rings must only be thrown; they cannot be placed onto the sticks by hand.

leaf For a throw to count, the ring must fully land on the stick.

leaf Each player makes an equal number of throws.

Attention

The sticks should be placed firmly and securely into the ground and checked to prevent the risk of falling. The play area should be cleared of stones, holes, and slippery surfaces.

The throwing distance should be adjusted according to the children's age and developmental level. Distances that are too far may be challenging, while distances that are too close may reduce the effectiveness of the activity.

The rings used should be made of thick and soft materials for safety. During the activity, care should be taken to ensure that children do not stand too close to each other while throwing.
